On the occasion of World NGO Day, India’s largest aluminum producer Vedanta Aluminum said that its efforts in collaboration with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have saved the lives of 5 lakh people in the financial year 2023 alone. Has made positive change possible. Overall, the company’s social interventions in the last financial year have had a positive impact on the lives of more than 6.30 lakh people. The company has actively worked with more than 20 NGOs for socio-economic progress in line with community needs, government developmental programs and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Vedanta Aluminum’s operations include: one of the world’s largest aluminum smelters located in Jharsuguda, a world-class alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, Odisha and India’s iconic aluminum producer Balco and growing mining sector located in Korba, Chhattisgarh. Together, these operations are working to bring these communities into the socio-economic mainstream by reducing multidimensional rural poverty in many areas of rural India and creating entrepreneurship and employment opportunities. The company’s social welfare interventions are based on five thematic areas focusing on education, health, livelihoods, rural infrastructure and women and child development along with sports, arts and culture at the grassroots level.
With the help of NGOs, the company is able to make deep inroads into the rural communities, due to which the organization gets information about the social fabric and customs of the communities. These organizations review the requirements on a scientific basis to identify the needs of the communities and how they can benefit from Vedanta Aluminum’s social support. Programmatic approaches to welfare initiatives are developed and regularly evaluated to measure their impact. Based on these conclusive findings, NGOs modify or add to the ongoing programmes.
Each NGO partner working with Vedanta Aluminum is selected after a rigorous process. Once the NGO is on board, the implementation and impact of the projects are closely monitored. Regular auditing of associates is conducted as per international standards. Initiatives are taken with the long-term goal of making communities self-reliant. Project milestones are designed so that the community ultimately takes full ownership of the project.

Similarly, the company in collaboration with Sarthak Jan Vikas Sansthan has launched Project Nai Kiran, a transformative project focused on ensuring better menstrual health and hygiene among rural girls.
Vedanta Aluminum in collaboration with Vedanta Foundation has run skill development programs to enhance the employability of rural youth by training them in trades like electricals and tailoring. In collaboration with Action for Food Production (AFPRO), the company is promoting modern agricultural practices and food security. Initiatives like ‘Jeevika Samridhi’ in Jharsuguda and ‘Mor Jal Mor Mati’ in Korba have been taken. Apart from this, the company in collaboration with Sports Village Foundation is providing archery and karate training to rural youth and these youth have won many awards at the state and national level.
